First Act - The Early Birds
Main Band - Blueskillet Rovers Jug Band formed early this century – as a result of the need for up-front, accessible, on the level entertainment. Music and performers that you can see, connect with, even get involved with.
Performing mainly on the street, and as acoustically as is possible, ‘The Rovers’ present old school, jug band style blues, with a zest and passion, that emanates the good times within the music. Keeping it real folks!
Banjo, washboard, resonator and cigarbox guitars, bass, trombone and harmonica blend authentically and acoustically, as the tunes were played before the days of amps, cables and electricity.
The BlueSkillet Rovers have been a hit on the street and on the stage, at Woodford Folk Festival, Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival, Blues on Broadbeach, Gympie Muster, Village Blues, – and a host of weddings, parties, rodeos, markets, themed events, centenaries, festivals and other small events.
‘The Rovers’ are renowned for not using, and in fact boycotting, the use of any electricity in as many of their performances as possible, (except to power fridges for beers and bourbon – rehydration fluids) in the aim to keep the music ‘alive’ with the use of good old acoustic instruments…and a ‘shit load ‘ of energy!! This really allows the audience to BE a part of the show…the band can mingle with the crowd, and the audience can get right up close to the performers. Music …keeping it real folks!

It has taken a while, and a great deal of convincing, but BlueSkillet are moving with the times……. They have printed business cards AND…. Now they’re on Facebook! Hold on to your hats folks! Yip Yah!

Main Band -HORN AMONG THE ROSES
John has put together the unusual combination of the incredible talents of Elizabeth Lord and Sharny Russell and his own incomparable flugelhorn playing. Audiences who have experienced this joyful, inspired trio have been absolutely captivated.
JOHN HOFFMAN
U.S. born John Hoffman has toured and recorded with the Buddy Rich Band, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Glenn Miller Buddy de Franco Band and the Harry James Orchestra. He has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sara Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis Jnr., Shirley Bassey, Ray Charles and other greats.
Living in Australia since 1977, John has led his own Big Band in Sydney, has performed and recorded with leading Australian artists, and is truly a legend in Australian Jazz.
John currently lectures in Jazz Studies at Qld Conservatorium Griffith University, where he directs the renowned Con Artists. He travels to all states as one of Australia’s leading trumpet players and music educators.
ELIZABETH LORD
Reminiscent of the great song-stylists of popular music’s golden age, vocalist Elizabeth Lord delivers a stellar performance that is at once classy and feisty! The musical and emotional range of her voice, coupled with a torchy, seductive flair for the jazz standard, lifts her beyond simply a tribute to a bygone era – the audience simply cannot resist.
“I grew up on a musical diet that included Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Doris Day and Julie London, singers who heard the call to keep the familiar and beloved songs of the past alive, with a fresh and original approach”.
In recent years, Elizabeth has enjoyed experimenting with a more contemporary repertoire, including songs from The Beatles, Hal David and Burt Bacharach and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
“What appeals to me most is a strong sense of beauty in both the melody and the lyric. A song can be incredibly simple, yet, hold a magic and mystery just waiting to be discovered, and each one is subject to the interpretation of the performer. I have found that the real delight of it all is in the sharing between audience and performer, and also between the musicians on stage. When we are open to discover something new in a song, as if we were greeting it for the first time, wonderful things can happen!”.
SHARNY RUSSELL
In a world of over-rated and over-stated singers, Sharny Russell-van Herp is a gem. Listening to her is an exquisite experience.” – that’s how Eric Myers, editor of National Jazzchord Magazine, views Sharny, after seeing her perform with her trio at the Bellingen Jazz Festival.
Known and respected as one of Australia’s best jazz singers, Sharny brings a wealth of experience to her performances. Having performed at “The Basement” in Sydney with her own band, which included James Morrison, she has been a regular feature act at many jazz festivals around the country – most recently, the North Coast Jazz Festival.
Being also a pianist, composer and arranger, Sharny has played and sung with many of the top names in jazz. A unique artist, Sharny is equally at home on vocals and keyboard. Loved by musicians and audiences alike for her obvious musical skills, her warm personality, and her dazzling vocal improvisation, she enthralls audiences continually.
Sharny released her original 10 track CD “A Good Thing on Hold” on the ABC Jazz label, and in 2004 won the APRA (Australian Performing Rights Association) Jazz Award.

Main Band - Fine Jazz Organizers
The Fine Jazz Organizers are Pietro Fine on organ, Azo Bell on guitar, and Louis Burdett on drums. Martha Baartz, guesting on sax is well known for her energy and spirited, melodic and soulful playing .
Pietro Fine has years of experience in jazz, funk, blues & world music on clarinet, piano & Hammond organ with footpedals as a composer/arranger and a band leader. He led the house jazz band at "Greenhills on Tweed" for almost 2 years in the early 80s.
Azo Bell is a master musician, both a virtuoso and highly imaginative improviser, who never fails to surprise and delight with his ever-changing ideas.
Louis Burdett is one of the most enigmatic and controversial performers working in Australia today. He played with the Ray Price Jazz Band, Paris Green, toured Australia with Louis Tillet and Tex Perkins and in India with Clarion Fracture Zone.
Over forty years ago, Azo and Pietro were both members of eclectic jazz collective Keys and the Keys Music Association, which has been considered influential enough in the development of Australian jazz to be discussed at length in both the Bruce Johnson's Book "Oxford Companion to Australian Jazz" and the John Clare/Gail Brennan book "Bodgie Dada and the Cult of Cool".
As well as their, own original compositions, FJO will play jazz standards and rearrangements of songs from the pop charts. Martha, Azo and Pietro alternate on leading the instrumentals or turning out a finely honed quartet.
