Friday 25th September 2020 - "The Hint Of Swing Big Band"
The Hint of Swing Band brings us a smorgasboard of experienced musos, most of whom have now retired in all but their continuing urge to bring music to life. Led by reeds player Roger Munsie, whose formative years with the RAAF Central Band included a tour that incorporated the Montreal Expo, the outfit also features keyboard player Garry Matthews, a classically trained pianist who came to Queensland after many years tinkling the ivories in a popular Melbourne based trio.
Also with his musical roots in Melbourne is guitarist and vocalist John Pieri, who made his name in GTV 9 children’s TV shows before appearing in Graham Kennedy’s ‘Tonight” show. Following some years in which he was in great demand in the recording studios, John moved to Queensland and formed the band ‘Mirror Image’ which performed for many years at Seagulls, as well as appearing on Queensland TV.
Another vocalist, this time with trumpeting talents as a bonus, is James Henshaw, who learned his horn craft with the Royal Australian Navy School of Music , and studied vocals at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. His wide repertoire has earned him many a TV slot, and for over 20 years he’s been a specialist music and band teacher in both primary and secondary schools.
Tenor sax player Tab Paenga is already well known to Tweed audiences, and in his lengthy resume he lists Australian tours backing artists of the calibre of Sir Harry Secombe, Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, Dame Vera Lynn and Cilla Black. Alongside him is trombonist Pat Steer, who can match Tab’s namedropping with support credits for the likes of Julia Anthony, Frank Ifield, Max Bygraves, Des O’Connor and Kamahl
Lead trumpet duties are handled by Jack McPherson, whose abilities became evident at the tender age of eight. Since then he’s been mentored by some of the best brass players around, and can list among his credentials recent appearances in The Gold Coast Big Band, Hint of Swing Big Band, Free Beer, Gold Coast City Wind Orchestra, Just the Two of Us, and Muso Mates Big Band.
All in all, a truckload of talent and experience, served up at room temperature for your delight and delectation.
