Friday 25th October 2019 - "Horn Among Roses"
A real treat for true lovers of the pure art form, when the three multi-acclaimed musicians who comprise ‘Horn Among the Roses’ grace our stage. The ‘horn’ in question is either a trumpet or a flugelhorn – or possibly both, depending on his mood – played to perfection by US born but Australian resident John Hoffman, who lists, among those for whom he has provided musical support, artists you may have heard of such as Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sara Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Junior, Dizzie Gillespie and Ray Charles. If they thought he was good enough, who are we to argue?
As if uncertain whether or not these staggering credentials would be sufficient to secure him a gig at Condong, John brings with him the ever popular Elizabeth Lord, whose torchy, seductive and mesmeric voice makes any jazz standard a novel experience as she brings us new interpretations of the songs she grew up with and, in her own words, dedicates her talents to ‘keeping the familiar and beloved songs of the past alive, with a fresh and original approach.’
The third member of this triumvirate of tradition is Sharny Russell, whose credits include having appeared in Sydney’s legendary ‘Basement’ Club with James Morrison among her backing musicians. Pianist, composer and arranger, Sharny adds a warm personality and a capacity for vocal harmonies that is almost as breathtaking as her quiet modesty and ease when chatting with the many fans of her laid-back style.
Don’t miss this one if you wish to retain your confidence in your ability to spot a musical bargain.
